Give your operation the edge
Processing data close to the action gives you immediate feedback and reduces the load on your bandwidth. That’s why we developed the Telia IoT Edge. It’s a powerful edge processor and high-performance gateway combined. And it’s built rugged and reliable for the real world.
You’ll find Telia IoT Edge in a broad range of real-world applications. For example, you’ll find them on most of the buses in Sweden as well as in buildings, bus stops and traffic lights as far afield as New York.
A proven performer
Public transport is the area Telia IoT Edge is best known – or MIIPS as it used to be called. It’s the edge processor and gateway used in Telia Smart Public Transport, which you can find in over 60% of the buses in Sweden. The Telia IoT Edge consolidates all IT systems onto one platform and delivers real-time data to the driver on a single screen. At the same time, it delivers data to cloud-based fleet management systems to enable entire transport systems to be optimized.
IoT Edge Gateway and Processor
Telia IoT Edge securely collects and processes data at the edge at the same time as encrypting and delivering it to cloud-based operational systems via API that can be accessed via customisable dashboard. Because it’s built on an open Linux platform that makes it easy for you to integrate into your existing systems, you can add new functionality as new possibilities emerge in the future. But at the same time as making it easy to say ‘yes’ to things, it also makes it very easy to say no. You need to actively select which applications can access your Telia IoT Edge.
Industry-grade toughness enterprise-grade reliability
The tougher the conditions, the more Telia IoT Edge stands out. Whether it’s onboard a truck in Northern Finland or deep in the basement of a building in Central Stockholm, it stands up to whatever weather extremes nature can throw at it – it was developed in Umeå after all. To let you can keep evolving your services – and for troubleshooting on the go – Telia IoT Edge can be remotely reconfigured and rebooted without disrupting your operations. For reliability in uncertain conditions, it has dual processors that monitor each other with multiple redundant communication fallback options.
We offer a host of applications already available on the Telia IoT Edge. The open platform lets you can develop more or choose the best-of-breed third-party applications you want to use. And because you can push new functionality to the gateway remotely, you can make improvements on the go without interrupting your operation. The gateway supports 3G and 4G cellular standards as well as Ethernet connectivity. You can select a fixed connection as your first carrier and a mobile connection to provide redundancy. The operating system runs with a CPU card that is monitored by a base card with its own processor that supports the functions. The unit comes ready to “Plug ‘n Play”, with standard configuration and a pre-installed SIM card upon request, making installation quick and easy. Specific configurations are then retrieved from the cloud.
A closed gateway on an open platform
Security is the foundation on which the Telia IoT Edge was built. In its early days, it was used by a security company monitoring large cash movements. Today, it is one of the only devices trusted within New York’s secure NYCWiN wireless network. Telia IoT Edge is used both for traffic light monitoring and to transmit bus arrival times to Real Time Passenger Information signs for passengers.

Security is no accident
Security-by-design is only as good as the design. That’s why we’ve designed the Telia IoT Edge with security at every level.
- Communication is AES encrypted
- RSA is used for key distribution
- HMAC-MD5 is used for authentication
- Access attempts from unregistered devices or terminals are blocked and logged
- Status notifications are sent via text message, e-mail or XML via TCP/IP
- Additional security levels can be implemented for specific needs
Delivering today with tomorrow in focus
We embrace open standards so you can keep evolving with new opportunities as they emerge. This is proven by the fact we are ITxPT certified. The ITxPT (Information Technology for Public Transport) is a non-profit organistion that promotes common standards for onboard IT systems in public transport. This makes it a lot easier and cheaper for you to develop new applications for the Telia IoT Edge in the future.
