2G and 3G Switch-off: What network evolution means for IoT

Mobile network operators around the world are in the process of migrating from old 2G and 3G networks to more capable technologies like 4G and 5G. The consequent sunsetting of 2G and 3G can have significant consequences for organizations that have relied on these networks for their IoT projects.

This White Paper has been compiled by IoT industry analyst firm Transforma Insights, in collaboration with Telia Company and Ericsson.

In the paper and webinar you will learn more about how 2G and 3G closure affect organizations as well as getting an insight to potential cost and benefits of a technology upgrade. You will also get a walk-through of the new modern technology options that are available including LTE, NB-IoT, LTE-M and 5G and recommendations on how enterprises should act when considering upgrading from 2G/3G.

What's in the White Paper and what will you learn in the webinar?

1. Why are the operators doing this?

Mobile network operators (MNOs) around the world are going through a process of migrating from old legacy networks, specifically 2G and 3G. There are several reasons why the MNOs have made this decision.

2. Where and when is it happening?

In parts of the world 2G and 3G switch-off has been advancing for a decade or more, but in Europe it’s a relatively recent development with a diverse range of approaches and timelines. This paper provides a guide to where and when the 2G and 3G sunsetting will occur in the Nordics and Baltic region and beyond.

3. How will this affect my organization?

The impact on any given organisation of 2G and 3G switch-off will vary substantially depending on that organisation's specific circumstances.  Transforma Insights has identified five possible implications for enterprises to help you start the process.

4. Costs and benefits of switching to another technology

Replacing hardware and changing logistics of course involves cost but there also significant benefits for enterprises migrating to newer generations. New technologies offer new capabilities, but there are numerous other benefits for example, introducing new management features and cheaper tariffs.

5. What are my technology options?

The various different cellular connectivity technologies have different capabilities, which an enterprise will want to consider when making decisions on how they might want to upgrade, capabilities like coverage, longevity, and cost.

6. Recommendations

Finally, and most importantly Transforma Insights offers a set of 10 recommendations about how enterprises should act when considering upgrading from 2G/3G.

Cellular technologies

There are effectively two types of technologies that enterprises need to consider: technologies focused on providing bandwidth (i.e. 4G and 5G) and technologies providing cheaper devices with long battery life (i.e. LTE-M and NB-IoT, and to a lesser extent Cat1 bis and 5G RedCap).
