Modernize your business

We have entered the 5G area. Telia, as well as most of the world, is in the process of closing down 2G and 3G networks. This network shift - the sunset of old technologies and the dawn of the fifth generation of mobile networks - is the next level in the evolution of mobile communications. It’s enabling new ways to solve business challenges and digitalizing ways of working. An IoT revolution supporting new possibilities for Internet of Things for business.

If you have IoT or M2M solutions that are dependent on 2G or 3G connectivity, or if you just need to digitalize your business, the time to act is now.

Four steps to upgrade your IoT/M2M

Our IoT experts give you useful information and the necessary tools to modernize your IoT or M2M solution. This four-step guide will take your IoT projects from sunsetting 2G/3G to modern network technologies.

1. It's time to act

Set your upgrade strategy and determine how much time you have until your current solution becomes outdated. Move backwards from the network closure or sunset date and establish a time plan. A thorough plan will help you on your way.

2. Evaluate your current situation.

It starts with a detailed examination. For example, ask yourself what the consequences are if your devices stop working, how your existing devices are used and if your devices are locked into 3G.

3. Start building your new IoT/M2M solution

Once you know what needs to be done, it's time to get the right technology in place. Explore your options for networks, devices and software and choose the right one for you. There are several IoT network examples such as cellular NB-IoT, LTE-M or LTE to support your IoT projects.

4. Make sure your IoT solution is future-proof

It’s easy to forget the details when you want to deploy fast. But security and scalability, as well as efficient management and deployment affects your costs and the life cycle management of your IoT product.

As the network shutdown of 2G/3G is getting closer it’s time to prepare. If you have IoT solutions connecting to old networks or are implementing new IoT projects, this guide will help you in your transformation to future proof solutions in the 5G era.

Will 2G/3G sunset impact your IoT device connection?

All devices that rely on 2G and 3G for voice or data connectivity will be affected by the network shut down. Sometimes these are referred to in other terms. For example, 3G technology might also be referred to as UMTS, HSPA or HSPA+. GSM, GPRS, EDGE are a few abbreviations or  IoT network examples known for 2G.

To find out if your device is affected by the closure and identify possible updates or replacement options, we recommend contacting your hardware manufacturer.

For a modern IoT device to properly work on a network, it’s important to consider the IoT network requirements

Expected network closure dates

The network sunset is already in progress but the exact 2G and 3G sunset dates vary around world. Globally many operators have chosen to close 2G before 3G, however in the Nordics and Baltics, the 3G switch off is done before the  2G switch off.

The gradual 3G network sunset  has started in most of Telia’s counties with the aim to close 3G by the end of 2023.  The ambition for 2G is to retire the network by the end of 2025, but this will be determined by local circumstances in each of the local countries.
