Telia’s public transport customers used Eco Driving to reduce CO2 emissions by almost 7 400 tons

By connecting public transport buses, Telia’s customers can make every journey count when it comes to reducing environmental impact. By using Telia’s and partner Drivecs EcoDriving solution, customers have saved a total of three million liters of diesel, 1.1 million kilograms of gas and 7, 391 tons of CO2 emissions during 2023.

Let’s put those figures into perspective.

The fact that Telia’s EcoDriving solution enabled public transport operators to reduce CO2 emissions by a total of 7,391 tons* could be illustrated in several ways. For example, the diesel and gas saved would be enough to enable one bus to complete 333 laps around the globe. Expressed in terms of energy, it amounts to 45.5 GWh, which is equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of 4,830 households in Sweden. And the reduction in CO2 is equivalent to the emissions of more than 47,000 return flights between Helsinki and Stockholm.

Telia’s sustainability strategy in service of the customers: EcoDriving one example

Telia’s sustainability strategy captures both the company’s responsibility to address its own negative footprint and its responsibility to provide tools and business opportunities that help customers reduce their footprints.

EcoDriving for public transport buses is one example of how Telia’s customers use onboard IoT solutions and driver services to optimize their fleet operations. When it comes to cutting fuel and energy consumption and reducing both cost and CO2 emissions, every single bus or train journey counts. That’s why Telia and its partner Drivec calculated the savings achieved by Telia’s customers during 2023.

Telia EcoDriving provides drivers with real-time information that enables them to consume less fuel and energy while lowering their CO2 emissions. As a nice side effect, smooth driving also ensures a more comfortable ride for passengers. Telia EcoDriving customers can also easily follow up on their progress, ensuring they continue to meet their environmental and financial goals.

In 2023, Telia EcoDriving customers saved together in total*:
•    3 million liters of diesel
•    1.1 million kilograms of gas
•    7,391 tons of CO2 emissions
•    SEK 95 million
•    45,5GWh – when converting all fuel savings (diesel + gas) to energy

These reductions are equivalent to:
•    the CO2 emissions from 47,076 return flights between Helsinki and Stockholm
•    the fuel (diesel + gas) consumed by a bus completing 333 laps around the Earth
•    the average annual electricity consumption of 4,830 households in Sweden

* About the calculation: These figures represent the results of bus driver data analysis from the Telia EcoDriving/Drivec system. The data analysis aims to study the effect on fuel consumption based on consumption patterns per depot, vehicle model, driver classification and road type (city, highway or a mix), and the savings the solution enabled in terms of fuel (gas and diesel) consumption, cost and CO2 emissions.
