Tracking offshore navigation markers

Tracking offshore navigation markers

Winter storms and ice can move navigation markers many miles from where they are meant to be. In the past, that meant sending out boats to search for them every spring. But Yepzon had a better idea.

By connecting the markers it would be possible to monitor their location remotely. But first, they would need connectivity that could reach the outer islands of the archipelagos - and operate on the power of a small solar panel.

The solution is currently being tested together with the Finnish Maritime Authority. GPS location of each navigation marker is collected via a solar-powered tracking sensor. This data is the sent directly to Telia's cellular network via NB-IoT. This enables simple, cost-effective connectivity further out to sea than was previously possible.

This will enable the maritime authority to identify the current location of each marker remotely and see whether they are in the right place. If they have moved out of position, they can see exactly where they are rather than needing to send boats out to search manually.

This has to always work. But it only needs a small amount of data.
That’s why we’re looking at Narrowband.

Telia LPWA

Telia LPWA connectivity for IoT is delivered by the 2 technologies that make up the 'massive IoT' component of 5G. NB-IoT is optimised for low-data connectivity with maximum reach, energy efficiency and cost effectiveness.  LTE-M offers higher data rates to do things previously only possible with high-performance IoT connectivity.

Both technologies reach further and deeper underground and into buildings than traditional IoT connectivity. And because they're both direct-to-network, you can connect directly to our cellular network for seamless connectivity across the Nordics. Learn more about NB-IoT & LTE-M
