Monitoring underground rat traps

Monitoring underground rat traps

Rats in the sewers help clean up mess. But when there are too many – or they start coming above ground – there's a problem to solve. As an alternative to the traditional control method of using rat poison, Ratel developed a trap designed to be placed in the sewer.

In order to know how effective these traps were - and when they needed to be serviced - they connected them to an IoT platform and an app. However, getting an IoT signal to work effectively from underground and through heavy steel plates, they needed something special. That's when they turned to Telia NB-IoT. Watch the film to see how they got on.

Rat traps are placed deep in the sewer with simple bluetooth connectivity to a Telia NB-IoT module under the manhole cover. Each time a rat is killed this information is sent to the IoT platform. It also provides an automated notification when the compressed air cannister needs to be replaced or the trap serviced.

The city authorities who use these traps are able to monitor the traps and their status via the web-based portal. Field staff responsible for servicing the traps also have an easy-to-use mobile app. As well as rat data, the traps also send information if any flooding is detected in sewers. Learn more at ratel.dk

We have an example from Copenhagen where we installed units not in the cellar, but the second cellar, in the manhole, underneath the manhole cover... and still reaching a fine signal with NB-IoT

Telia LPWA

Telia LPWA connectivity for IoT is delivered by the 2 technologies that make up the 'massive IoT' component of 5G. NB-IoT is optimised for low-data connectivity with maximum reach, energy efficiency and cost effectiveness.  LTE-M offers higher data rates to do things previously only possible with high-performance IoT connectivity.

Both technologies reach further and deeper underground and into buildings than traditional IoT connectivity. And because they're both direct-to-network, you can connect directly to our cellular network for seamless connectivity across the Nordics. Learn more about NB-IoT & LTE-M
