Connecting the grid
Solar and wind energy present a new challenge for the power grid. It has been developed over 100 years to distribute energy from large-scale power plants that produce energy at a constant and predictable rate. Green energy however is often more variable. It produces more when the wind blows and the sun shines – and less at other times.
In order to make the most of green energy – and to enable power grid operators to maximise the usage of their assets – Heimdall Power developed a sensor that made it possible to remotely monitor the grid and manage it in real time.
Sensors are placed on the power lines to monitor their temperature and power throughput as well as to detect and locate any broken lines. Each sensor transmits this data to the next sensor along the line. When any of these sensors are within range of NB-IoT the data is sent to the cloud.
Grid operators are able to monitor how much of each power line's capacity they are using. Traditionally, this has been based on estimates with a large margin of error. With real time monitoring, the capacity can be increased by 30%. This also makes it possible to maximise the usage of green power sources.
