Telia's location data enables optimal placement of charging stations
Telia’s solution Crowd Insights is now used to determine the best locations for electric vehicle charging stations in Finland. Telia Crowd Insights provides reliable information on crowds’ movement patterns based on mobile network data.
Telia has delivered Crowd Insights to Finland's leading provider of location information technology, Esri Finland Oy, which works together with charging system provider Plugit. As a result, Plugit can more accurately determine where new electric vehicle charging stations should be placed to best serve the end customers.
"Information about people's actual movements helps to identify, for example, bottlenecks in the transport system,” says Suvi Valkama, Business Development Manager at Telia. “This data provides means to achieve cities' emission reduction targets. Knowing people's actual movements helps identify the best areas for charging stations, in turn supporting the green transition and climate goals.”
Plugit’s core business is meeting the needs of both professional and private traffic, through its own charging network. By identifying new areas, Plugit has succeeded in increasing its coverage and contribute to Finland's green transition.
"When building the network, location data analytics play a key role for us, which is why Telia’s Crowd Insights data has been an important part of our analysis along with other data sources," says Lauri Keskinen, Business Director Charging as a Service at Plugit.
Many charging points require extensive groundwork
One example is the station for high-powered, fast charging at Helsinki Airport, which required thorough planning. The charging point is used more than 5 000 times per month, and that number is constantly rising. Visitor data helps to confirm the best options for this investment. In the visualization and analysis of mobility data, Esri is responsible for the geospatial user interface.
"Crowd movement data can be visualized and analyzed in Esri's geospatial user interface and combined with other data sources. This creates the best way to steer and plan the customer's business," says Esri’s Jussi Lehtonen.
